the Clarke family groups

Two men were listed in the 1853 inventory of Robert D Sewall with the last name Clark(e): Thomas Clark, age 70, and John Clarke, “old”. In Sewall’s will, he manumitted Abraham Clarke, his faithful house servant”; he is named in the will as Abraham Clarke, and listed in the inventory with his first name only.

*A note on spelling: Clarke is spelled with and without the “e” on the end. It is currently unclear if this is to distinguish between different Clark(e) families or due to careless errors on part of the writer. Efforts have been made to use the form in the document being cited. For overall discussion of the family, I will use the Clarke spelling.

The purpose of this page is to compare the 1821 & 1853 inventory with the 1870 census and Prince George’s Marriage records (with other records as necessary) to attempt to identify family groups.
